Adrian Gonzalez Headed to Red Sox?

by Ben Cook on December 16, 2009

Adrian Gonzalez believes he will be traded to the Boston Red Sox in the next 10 days according to ESPN's Jorge Arangure.

Arangure states, "Source close to A Gonzalez believes he'll be traded to Red Sox within next 10 days." He's quick to add however, "Does this mean deal will happen? No. But momentum is there."

The first baseman would provide a big boost to the retooling Red Sox offense but would come at a steep price.

Clay Buchholz would almost certainly be a required part of the deal that could also include Jacoby Ellsbury as well as a high end prospect.

Jim, you know that’s an interesting idea & one I’m kind of surprised we haven’t heard more about. If I were a Red Sox fan (they’re actually my 2nd most hated team just behind the Cubs) I’d be inclined to agree with you. I don’t mind giving up Ellsbury but Buchholz or Lester who’s name has also been kicked around in the rumors seem like a very high price to pay.

I don’t think the Sox would go for Michael Young over Gonzalez. The Sox just picked up Marco Scutaro, a very good leadoff man in Toronto’s offense, which wasn’t exactly the bully in the playground, and would be complimented well with Gonzalez as an RBI man in Boston. It’s an offense that now needs a left-handed power bat since Papi hasn’t quite been what he needed to be, which actually shouldn’t be such a scare since baseball is a game of numbers and Papi still finished with 28 jacks and 99 RBIs, but I digress. Given that the Sox trade Ellsbury, Buchholz and some change to SD for Gonzalez, that leaves the Sox with a 1-6 order that would look something like this: Scutaro, Pedroia, Youkilis, Gonzalez, Martinez, Ortiz. That’s a lot of runs to be scored. Match that with 3 starters that have the last names Beckett, Lackey, and Lester, and the Sox have a team that would be extremely tough to beat in any seven-game series.
