On this date in 1901, one of the founding clubs of the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers, moved to St. Louis and became the Browns. The Browns took their name from the original name of the St. Louis Cardinals.
During their years in St. Louis, the Browns won one pennant in 1944. They lost the World Series that year to their fellow tenants at Sportsman's Park, the Cardinals. But the Browns are best remembered for their players including one-armed outfielder Pete Gray, midget Eddie Gaedel and former Negro-Leaguer Satchel Paige.
The team moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles in 1954 after managing just eight wining seasons in St. Louis.
