Red Sox: Take Julio Lugo, Please!

by Ben Cook on July 17, 2009

Update 7-17-09:

The Red Sox have designated Julio Lugo for assignment according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal. The move comes as no surprise given the reports yesterday that the team viewed him as a "sunk cost."

The BoSox will have 10 days to trade the veteran shortstop before having to release him. As I said yesterday, teams will usually just wait until the player is released to avoid giving up even a minor prospect.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Boston Red Sox are willing to take on virtually all of Julio Lugo's salary in exchange for a "fringe" prospect.

The Sox have shortstop Jed Lowrie and third baseman Mike Lowell coming back from injury and apparently need the roster spot. Considering the team owes Lugo roughly $4.5 million for the rest of this year and $9 million next year they must need the spot REALLY bad.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they'll likely have to release Lugo if they don't find a team willing to part with a prospect, so any team interested may simply try to nab Lugo once he's released rather than giving up even a fringe prospect.

Lugo's batting .284 this year and it's likely the aging shortstop will catch on with a team somewhere since he'll be able to play for the league minimum for the next year and a half.
