Renteria to Giants “by the End of the Week”?

by Ben Cook on December 4, 2008

Update: True to his word, Giants GM Brian Sabean appears to have landed his target shortstop, Edgar Renteria. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Renteria underwent a physical on Wednesday and the deal should be announced today (Thursday). Hat tip to Tim over at MLBTradeRumors.com for finding this one.

The San Francisco Giants are reportedly still deep in talks with free agent short stop Edgar Renteria and the AP is reporting that the team could have a new short stop "by the end of the week."

The Giants were rumored to have offered Renteria a 2 year deal worth $18 million last week but those rumors were later debunked. It does appear, however, that "parameters of a deal are being traded between the sides." The Giants had also been considering free agent Rafael Furcal, however the team appears to have been turned off by his agent's statement that Furcal wouldn't sign before the winter meetings. If Furcal does indeed land a high dollar 4 year deal, that could drive the market up for the remaining short stops such as Renteria. By moving early on Renteria the club might be able to save some money and/or shave an extra year off the deal.
