Rumor: Cardinals and Rangers Hooking Up

by Ben Cook on December 3, 2007

Before anyone gets too excited let me mention this one is probably third or fourth hand information and we all know how accurate these rumors are anyway. With that having been said, there are apparently rumors floating around that, best I can tell, originated from a writer for the Dallas Morning News. The rumor has the Cardinals offering Scott Rolen and Chris Duncan to the Rangers for Hank Blaylock. Obviously Blaylock would be an upgrade from Rolen in terms of their remaining contracts (Rolen owed $36mil while Blaylock checks in at $12mil) and Duncan is apparently thrown in to help balance that out. The author does mention another player would likely be required from Texas and as such it's a bit difficult to gauge the balance of this deal.

As a Cardinal fan it's tough for me be objective on this one as well. Blaylock is obviously younger than Rolen but he's been injury prone as well. Plus, Duncan showed a LOT of promise last year and could end up being the protection in the lineup the Cardinals need for Pujols. If a pitcher was involved somehow, and the Cards ate some of the salary difference, I could be convinced but as it stands here, I'm inclined to say it would favor the Rangers.

I agree with all you say about Duncan/Rolen. But do we( Cardinals) want to give up 2 bats without getting a frontline pitcher? I don’t think so.

not true the manager of the rangers denied it at the meetings today

@tom, I agree. Pitching has to be the Cards’ priority!

we can’t deal duncan! he is the son of our pitching coach and a great player for years to come. this would be the worst cardinal trade in our history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I promise all Cardinal Fans this will not happen. The Cardinals are actively trying the move Rolen, but not Duncan.

If Rolen is traded St. Louis will most probably acquire free agent Pedro Feliz to replace.

Pitching is the priority. In fact, if you wish to know why the Yankees are relucant to include Ian Kennedy in the Santana trade it is due to a fourth-hand rumor. There are whispers of NY (AL) wanting Pulojs for a deal consisting of Kei Igawa, Chase Wright, and Ian Kennedy.

Rob, I’m not sure whether you’re a Yankee fan or what but you must be outside your mind. Well I guess I shouldn’t say that, the Yankees very likely do WANT Pujols but there’s not a chance in hell they’d get him for Igawa, Wright, and Kennedy lol.

P.S. This is the second unconfirmed rumor you’ve posted in the comments. Posting a link to your source would make you much more believable in the future.
