Rumor: Tigers Trading Inge

by Ben Cook on January 3, 2008

The writing has certainly been on the wall for Brandon Inge since the Tigers acquired third basemen Miguel Cabrera. And now, it appears that Inge has requested a trade. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Inge asked the Tigers to move him saying that he'd rather start somewhere else than remain in Detroit.

Several teams have been rumored to be interested in someone to man the hot corner, specifically the Dodgers and Angels, however, Inge's performance last year along with that hefty contract has apparently combined to make a deal difficult to pull off. It's tough to blame a player for making the request but asking for a trade always seems to put teams in a tough situation. It is well known that they are trying to move the player and thus they don't get full value. When the player involved is a fan favorite like Inge, and also owed more than 6 million a year for the next three years, it gets even tougher.

Brandon proved a valuable asset to Detroit last year with a outstanding glove at 3rd Base and a powerful arm but his bat has continued to struggle with power and average declining. At the same time with the addition of Cabrera, not knowing how he will do in Detroit compared to Florida, I feel that hanging onto Brandon Inge would be in the best interest of Detroit just in case. And he would be a valuable substitute at 3rd Base, Catcher, and the outfield if he was trained their. Not to mention maybe a substiture at first base.
