The Detroit Tigers can check "catcher" off their offseason shopping list after they, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthall, acquired Gerald Laird from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right handed pitching prospect Guillermo Moscoso as well as a 17 year old pitching prospect.
Laird had drawn interest from several teams (especially the Cincinnati Reds) and with the Rangers' depth behind the plate it was only a matter of time before one or more of the Texas backstops was shipped out.
Laird is known for his defense but did hit .276 last year in 344 at bats, and is elligible for arbitration for the first time this year, meaning he'll be under team control for at least another two seasons.
The Rangers had been rumored to be seeking Tigers pitcher Zach Miner in exchange for Laird but it appears they decided two young arms was a good enough return to pull the trigger on the trade.
