D-Backs Looking to Make a Big Splash Today

by kelly on July 31, 2012

Don’t tell the Arizona Diamondbacks the starting pitching market it dwindling. They want to add one – and an ace at that – with just hours to go before the deadline, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes.

It is unknown exactly who is the Diamondbacks’ target, but Rosenthal speculates on two names: Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez.

The Phillies are said to be open to dealing Lee, but not willing to eat much of his contract, which makes a deal unlikely. Lee is 33 and signed through 2015 with an option for 2016, making over $20 million per season.

Hernandez is an intriguing possibility, but his name has not surfaced in many rumors this month so it’d b a shock if the Mariners deal their top trade chip in the final hours. But the Diamondbacks do have Justin Upton that they could deal, and a package around the established, 24-year-old hitter could be something the Mariners would take a serious look at if they are open at all to dealing the 26-year-old Hernandez.

UPDATE: Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that the Diamondbacks say they’re keeping Upton and that they’re not targeting either Lee or Hernandez.
