The Arizona Diamondbacks have inked free agent third baseman Eric Chavez to a one-year contract, according to John Gambadoro of KTAR Phoenix sports radio on Twitter.

As Gambadoro notes, the Diamondbacks expect the veteran to platoon at third base with the righty hitting Chris Johnson.

Chavez, who turns 35 on Friday, has played in a utility role with the Yankees for two seasons after some injury riddle years with the A’s. He had a very productive 2012 season, hitting .281 with 16 home runs and 37 RBI while filling in for the injured Alex Rodriguez.

Speaking of A-Rod, Chavez’s departure puts the Yankees in a bit of a jam at third base, as A-Rod is not expected to be ready for the start of the season and the Yankees need a stopgap at third. You have to wonder if they’ll get more aggressive trying to pry Chase Headley from the Padres as the third base options continue to disappear.
