D-Backs To Shop Outfielders

by kelly on October 12, 2012

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a lot of outfield depth and could use some of that as trade bait to shore up the infield. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic writes that center fielder Chris Young is surely to be shopped, while the D-Backs could also choose one of Jason Kubel or Gerardo Parra to trade.

Young, 29, is signed through 2013 with a team option for 2014, and Arizona would probably have to eat some of that contract to move him. He was an All Star in 2010, but has struggled the last two seasons, hitting just .231 with 14 home runs and 41 RBI in 101 games last season. The Snakes look to be prepared to hand the everyday center field job to 23-year-old Adam Eaton next season.

One of Kubel or Parra will be the team’s left fielder next season and they’ll have to decide which one to keep and which one to trade. 30-year-old Kubel signed with the team as a free agent last offseason and hit .253 with 30 home runs and 90 RBI in his first season with the team. Parra, 25, won a Gold Glove in 2011 and hit .273 with 7 home runs and 36 RBI in 2012. Piecoro writes that the team could look to rely less on power and more on speed and defense in spacious Chase Field, hinting that maybe Kubel is the preferred trade bait between the two.

Of course, there’s also the chance that the team could move Justin Upton in a blockbuster, as has been rumored before, but Piecoro does not not expect that to happen. A lot can change once the winter trading season gets underway, though.

Spread the Rumor!
