The Orioles acquired veteran slugger Jim Thome in a trade with the Phillies today, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
The 41-year-old Thome will serve as a DH for the Orioles, who have surprised much of the baseball world by staying in contention well into the 2012 season. They currently are four games behind the A.L. East leader New York and are in the lead for the A.L.’s first Wild Card spot.
Thome is hitting .242 with 5 home runs and 15 RBI so far this season. Lifetime he has 609 home runs, which is good for a tie for 7th on the all-time list.
In return, the Phillies will receive prospects Kyle Simon and Gabriel Lino from the Orioles.
