Abreu works out with Red Sox

It’s possible that a former Yankee could end up playing for New York’s biggest rival.

According to a major league source, a free agent Bobby Abreu has been working out with the Boston Red Sox in Venezuela and is vying for a starting role at first base — a position that the 38-year old is not familiar with after spending much of his 17 major league seasons in the outfield.

Boston has been searching for a solid solution for the position throughout the off season, looking for both everyday and backup options, as they continue to resolve its issues surrounding free agent first baseman Mike Napoli, who originally agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract on Dec. 3.

The two-time All-Star is coming off a season in which he hit .242 with a .693 OPS for the Angels and Dodgers over 100 games and 257 plate appearances, and was 18 of 87 (.207) with one home run in his career as a pinch hitter.
