Nick Cafardo at Boston.com reported early Sunday morning that the Red Sox and relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves have avoided arbitration by settling on a one-year, non-guaranteed $1.2 million deal for 2012.
The deal includes up to $100,000 in bonuses if Aceves make the Sox's rotation (with $25,000 bonuses should he reach five, 10, 15 or 25 starts) or back in the bullpen (with $25,000 bonuses awarded for 55, 60, 65 and 70 appearances), with a maximum of $100,000 in potential bonuses.
Aceves had asked for a cool $1.6 million ,bur Boston countered with $900 thousand originally.
The 29-year old enters his 5th season, his second with the Red Sox where he 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 55 appearances.
The Yankees, Aceves’ previous employer, offered him only a minor-league, nonguaranteed deal after he pitched little in 2010 because of back problems.
The only arbitration-eligible player still unsigned is designated hitter David Ortiz, who has reportedly said that he was still hopeful of avoiding an arbitration hearing.
