According to multiple sources on the web Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox have signed recently acquired closer Andrew Bailey to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration.
Bailey's deal will pay him $3.9 million in 2012 with extra incentives which could add an additional $100,000 to his salary. Bailey, who made $465,000 last year, asked for $4.7 million; the team offered $3.35 million.
The 27-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Oakland Athletics this past winter, where he converted 24 of 26 save opportunities with a 3.24 ERA for the A's in 2011.
When the Red Sox acquired Bailey from the Oakland A’s, he immediately assumed the position shortly left open due to the departure of Jonathan Papelbon. With Bailey in the closer’s role, the Boston bullpen just got that much better.
If the Sox can land target #1 Roy Oswalt, they could have the best pitching staff in the AL East.
