Cubs ink Carlos Villanueva; close in on Edwin Jackson

by Matthew on December 20, 2012

Christmas came early for right-hander Carlos Villanueva who signed a two-year, $10M deal with the Chicago Cubs on Monday

This according to reports from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Villanueva spent the last two seasons in Toronto posting a combined 4.11 ERA, while splitting time in the rotation and the bullpen. In 2012, he went 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA with a 8.8 K/9 over 38 games/16 starts.

The 29-year-old’s deal however, is not the only thing that was rumored out of Cubs camp this morning, as ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Chicago is also  making “strong progress’’ on a four-year, $52-million deal with Edwin Jackson.

The right-handed Jackson was 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 31 starts (189 2/3 innings) with the Washington Nationals in 2012. The Nationals did not make a qualifying offer to Jackson, so they won’t get any draft-pick compensation should he leave.
