Cubs Shipping Soto to Rangers

by Ben Cook on July 30, 2012

The Chicago Cubs are either getting really friendly in the clubhouse, or they’ve been very busy as the trade deadline approaches.

First, it was Ryan Dempster being traded to the Braves, but rejecting the trade. Now, there are rumors of the Dodgers trying to acquire Dempster and Alfonso Soriano.

Just a few moments ago, Reed Johnson was pulled from the game after an apparent trade, possibly to the Tigers.

Now it appears catcher Geovany Soto has also been traded to the Texas Rangers (see Update 2).

Once again it’s unclear whether Soto is part of a larger deal (perhaps included in the Johnson deal?) but the 29 year old catcher is unlikely to fetch much of a return on his own. He’s hitting just .199 although he does have 6 home runs in 174 at bats this season.

Update: The Cubs have apparently traded prospect Brett Jackman as well although the Soto & Johnson deals are reportedly separate deals.

Update 2: Tim Brown reports Soto is headed to the Rangers.

The Cubs will reportedly receive 24 year old AA pitcher Jacob Bringham in exchange for Soto. It would seem Brett Jackman is part of the Reed Johnson trade, NOT part of the Soto deal as originally suspected.
