The latest Cuban sensation has signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported on Twitter the Cubs will sign 20-year-old free agent Jorge Soler. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com adds that the deal is for 9 years with about $30 millionĀ guaranteed.
Many other teams were interested in Soler, with the Yankees and Dodgers coming the closest to competing with the Cubs to sign him.
Soler will naturally draw comparisons to Yoenis Cespedes, as he is a Cuban defector and a right-handed hitting power hitter like the A’s slugger. But at just 20, he will begin his professional career in the U.S. in the minors, unlike Cespedes who came directly to the majors.
Many around baseball already consider Soler to be a top 50 prospect already.
