Rumor: All Star Roberts Traded to the Cubs

by Ben Cook on January 9, 2008

The Baltimore Orioles have reportedly traded All Star second baseman Brian Roberts to the Chicago Cubs for starting pitcher Sean Marshall, shortstop Ronny Cedeno, and a 22-year old pitching prospect, Sean Gallagher. This according to the OriolesHangout.com website which obtained the news "through several sources."

The deal had long been rumored in different variations but there has been no public confirmation from team officials.

Roberts has averaged 11 home runs, 56 RBI, and a .288 batting average over the past two years after having a career year (18, 73, .314) in 2005. Marshall is a 25 year old lefty and posted a 3.92 ERA last year in 19 starts for the Cubs last year. Cedeno is a 24 year old and only received 74 at bats in 38 games last year despite playing in 151 games the year before.

If this is in fact the finalized version of the deal, it could be a win win for the teams involved. While Roberts will likely produce for the Cubs, he's also going to cost a lot more than the three players sent to Baltimore combined. Also, the Cubs gave up a young left handed pitcher with two year of major league experience along with another young pitching prospect. The immediate benefit to the Cubs may be worth it, but I think in the long run the O's got the better end of this one.

Spread the Rumor!

Cubs get better end of it, period. I think you’re just a cards fan. :P

Deal didn’t even happen…like I said–it was unofficial from the beggining. And for the record, I am a Cubs fan!

Not too thrilled about this deal if it is true. If anything I would rather have Bedard – may cost more, but definitely a better option for the Cubbies, than Roberts.
