White Sox to Decline Peavy’s Option

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes today that the White Sox will not pick up the $22 million team option on starter Jake Peavy, making the 31-year-old right hander a free agent after the season. The option comes with a $4 million buyout.

The White Sox acquired Peavy during the 2009 season in a trade with the Padres. This season he bounced back from an injury-riddled couple of years to post an 11-11 record with a 3.26 ERA in 29 starts. He was named to the All Star team this season.

Peavy should be an attractive free agent target for many teams this winter, in which he could be the second best starting pitcher available, after Zack Grienke.
