Cleveland is Determined to Add a Free Agent Hitter

Sounds like the Cleveland Indians have money to spend. They reportedly had four-year offer out to Shane Victorino before he chose to sign a three-year deal with the Red Sox. Now Buster Olney of ESPN.com is reporting that the Tribe is making a serious push for both Kevin Youkilis and Nick Swisher.

Yesterday we heard about the Yankees’ one-year offer to Youkilis, but the fact that the Indians have made a two-year offer to him could tip negotiations in their favor. As Olney notes, the opportunity to reunite with popular former manager Terry Francona surely helps their case with the former Boston third baseman.

As for Swisher, he’s being heavily pursued by the Mariners, but Olney thinks the edge goes to Cleveland. He could play first base for them and also provide depth in the outfield with his versatility.

I’ll be interesting to watch as the Indians and Mariners, two teams with below average offenses last year, duke out in the free agent market in attempts to bolster their offense for 2013.

Spread the Rumor!
