Early on Thursday, it was reported that the Kansas City Royals were shopping starters Luke Hochevar and Bruce Chen to make way for new arms, in the hopes to improve on a league worst team ERA from last season.
Then just a few hours later, agreed to terms on a one-year contract with pitcher Felipe Paulino for 2013, according to a team press release.
The deal allows the club to avoid arbitration with Paulino, who will earn $1.75MM in guaranteed money with another $250K in incentives, reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. That’s a drop from the $1.9M salary he earned in 2012.
The Royals are obviously looking at limiting their risks on the right-hander who had Tommy John surgery last July, and is not expected to pitch until at least midseason.
Since arriving in Kansas City in 2011, Paulino has a 3.55 ERA in 28 games before his injury.
