Tejada signs with Royals

Former 2002 American  League MVP Miguel Tejada has signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals.

The 38-year-old infielder told The Associated Press it is for one-year and $1.1 million with another $400,000 in performance bonuses. It will also become a major league deal once a roster spot opens up.

The six-time All-Star signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles last spring, but was released at his request in June, but not before hitting 260/.327/.290 with 18 RBI’s and a .617 OPS in 147 plate appearances down in Triple A.

Tejada spent 15 seasons in the majors, but last played in the bigs in 2011 with the Giants when he hit.239 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 91 games.

Since leaving the O’s a slimmer Tejada has been playing for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Republic Winter League.
