Mets Make Flurry of Moves

by Ben Cook on December 6, 2011

The New York Mets got down to business tonight at the Winter Meetings.

They traded centerfielder Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Ramirez had a decent year last year posting a 2.62 ERA in over 60 innings pitched but Torres hit just .221 in just under 400 plate appearances.

Pagan on the other hand should be a nice addition for the Giants, as a career .279 hitter who has stolen 69 bases over the last two seasons with a little bit of pop (18 homers over the last two seasons) to boot. The addition of Pagan also likely kills any chances of the Giants signing Carlos Beltran.

They also inked former Blue Jay, Frank Francisco to a two year, $12 million deal to be their closer.

And for good measure, the Mets also signed Toronto reliever Jon Rauch as setup man for Francisco.

Francisco had a rough year closing games for the Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA with 17 saves and 4 blown saves in 54 appearances. Rauch put up even worse numbers, posting 11 saves with 5 blown saves and an ERA of 4.85.

The flurry of movesĀ  add up to quite the makeover for the Mets bullpen but as Toronto Jays fans can attest, there’s a lot of uncertainty with Rauch & Francisco as the anchors of your pen.
