Yanks Give Gardner One-Year Deal

The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Brett Gardner to a one-year, $2.85 million contract extension, avoiding arbitration. Brian Hoch of MLB.com tweeted the news.

Gardner, 29, earned a starting job in the Yankees outfield in 2010, but missed most of last season because of elbow surgery. He’s considered one of the best defensive outfielders in the league and also brings a speed element to his game, swiping a MLB-leading 49 bases 2011.

With Ichiro Suzuki and Nick Swisher both leaving as free agents and Curtis Granderson being shopped in trades, there should be plenty of playing time in the Yankees 2013 outfield for Gardner.
