Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting tonight that the Oakland Athletics are pushing hard for Hanley Ramirez.

The team just won its sixth consecutive game tonight and finds itself in the thick of the American League wild card race. They are getting little production out of the shortstop position this season and Ramirez could be a big boost for them. Of all the suitors for Ramirez, the A’s are in possibly the best position to acquire him – they have the lowest payroll in baseball and can afford his salary, this year and beyond, and they have an abundance of young pitching to deal for him.

Ramirez, 28, is signed through 2014 and will earn $15.5 million in 2013 and $16 million in 2014. Word is the Marlins would be willing to eat some of the salary if it improves the level of prospects they can get in return for him.
