Hamels to Stay in Philly With Big Extension

by kelly on July 25, 2012

There’s been a lot of speculation over the last few weeks about the status of free-agent-to-be Cole Hamels. Well speculate no more as the lefty starter has inked a monster extension to stay in Philadelphia. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports the deal is for $144 million over six years.

There had been talk of the Phillies trading him at the deadline if they couldn’t get a deal completed, with the Rangers as one of the likely destinations. The Phillies have not met exceptions this season and many wondered if they’d sell some of their upcoming free agents and retool for 2013.

The 28-year-old Hamels is a three-time All Star and is 11-4 this season with a 3.23 ERA in 19 starts. The Phillies are in last place in the N.L. East right now, but must figure they have the talent and the experience to get back into the race over the seasons’s final weeks.
