Phillies Among Many Teams Eyeing Gio Gonzalez

by kelly on December 7, 2011

Ken Rosenthal reported early this morning that Athletics starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez is one of the hottest topics at the Winter Meetings. Rosenthal says Gio is even getting more interest than free agent lefties Mark Buehrle and C.J. Wilson. Even with their deep starting pitching, the Phillies have reportedly shown interest in the 26-year-old southpaw.

Rosenthal speculates that the Phillies’ interest in Gonzalez could stem from the fact that Cole Hamels is a free agent after 2012, and they may be looking at finding someone younger and cheaper rather than keeping him beyond 2012.

Interestingly, Gonzalez has already twice in his career been involved in high-profile trades involving the Phillies. He was the player to be named later that the White Sox sent to Philadelphia in package for Jim Thome in 2005. Then, the Phillies traded him back to the White Sox, along with Gavin Floyd, for Freddy Garcia in 2006.

Gonzalez was an All Star in 2011, going 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA. He is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. Many teams other than the Phillies have been rumored to have interest in trading for him, including the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Reds, Tigers, Rangers, Rockies, Nationals, Red Sox, and Blue Jays.

UPDATE: Jim Bowden of ESPN says the A’s have asked for outfielder Dominic Brown in a package for Gonzalez.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser has confirmed the interest from the A’s side.

Lefty reliever Craig Breslow could be added to a trade to get the right prospect mix back to Oakland, she tweets.
