Phillies Place Cliff Lee on Waivers

It’s not shocking for teams to place players on waivers in August, and the Phillies have done just that.

Jeff Passan of YahooSports.com reports that the team has placed Cliff Lee on waivers on Thursday.

While this move in itself in no way means that Lee will change teams, he is expect to fully clear waivers, which will give the Phillies the option to trade him to any team.

And there are a lot of teams that would be interested in the 33-year old pitching ace.

However, the down side for the Phils is that they will likely have to absorb about $7-8 million per season of Lee’s salary over the next three seasons, if they want to pick up quality prospects in any deal they cut.

Plus the fact that Lee could veto moves to 21 teams on his no-trade-list.

That makes the likelihood of Lee actually moving a long shot, but there’s always a chance.

Lee (2-6) threw seven scoreless innings and to lead the Phillies to an 8-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.

He allowed five hits and one walk and struck out seven for Philadelphia, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
