The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to sign free agent outfielder Juan Pierre to a minor league deal, multiple sources have reported on Twitter.
Once considered one of the best young leadoff hitters in baseball, Pierre most recently played for the Chicago White Sox where he had a triple slash of .279/.329/.327. He swiped 27 bases but also got caught a league-leading 17 times.
Even if his starting days are behind him, the 34-year-old outfielder could be a nice weapon off the bench for the Phillies in the late innings, as a pinch runner, pinch hitter, or defensive replacement. He has 2,020 hits in his career and is the career active stolen bases leader with 554.
