Casey McGehee Traded to the Pirates

by kelly on December 13, 2011

The Pirates and the Brewers made a trade last night, sending third baseman Casey McGehee to Pittsburgh in exchange for righty relief pitcher Jose Veras.

McGehee gives the Pirates an right-handed option at third base, and he could potentially see some time at first base as well. He became expendable for the Brewers after the team signed free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez to a three-year deal yesterday. McGehee, 29, lost his starting job to Jerry Hairston in the playoffs last season as he struggled, hitting just .222 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI. He’s got potential to bounce back for the Bucs and be a middle-of-the-order bat for them though.

Veras, 31, had a nice 2011 season in Pittsburgh, with a 3.80 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 71 relief innings pitched. The Brewers had a need in the bullpen with both veteran relievers Takashi Saito and LaTroy Hawkins leaving as free agents.
