Padres rumored to be in talks with Brett Myers

As the New Year approaches, things have been rather quite on the baseball wire, but on Saturday rumors emerged that the San Diego Padres were talking to free-agent right-handed pitcher Brett Myers.

The San Diego Union-Tribune first leaked the information on its web site.

It is no shock that the Friars are engaged in talks with Meyers, who pitched 65 1/3 innings over 35 games each for the Astros and White Sox in 2012, as the team has been interested in several pitchers this offseason but has yet to make an purchase to upgrade its rotation.

Myers spent two seasons with the Astros as a starter, going 21-22 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 340 strikeouts in 439 2/3 innings during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, and could easily be re-converted to a starting pitcher if he was brought to San Diego.

The 32-year old went 3-8 with a 3.31 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 41 strikeouts as a reliever last year, and posted 19 saved games for Houston before being traded to the White Sox in July.
