Phillies Sign Free Agent Ibanez

by Ben Cook on December 14, 2008

The World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies have replaced departing free agent outfielder Pat Burrell, by signing Raul Ibanez to a three year deal reportedly worth $30 million. Ibanez, a type-A free agent from Seattle, will also cost the Phils their first round pick next year.

The 36 year old outfielder, Ibanez, has been incredibly consistent for the Mariners over the last three years, averaging 25 home runs, 113 RBIs and a .291 batting average. He’ll undoubtedly be the champ’s every day left fielder and will not only replace Burrell’s offensive production, but should provide a defensive upgrade in the outfield as well.

The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels had reportedly also been interested in retaining Ibanez’s services but both teams had other priorities and were pre-empted by the Phillies who had put a left fiedler near the top of their offseason shopping list.
