Cardinals Seeking Pitching

by Ben Cook on July 16, 2009

St. Louis Post Dispatch writer Joe Strauss tweets that the St. Louis Cardinals will seek pitching help if 5th starter Todd Wellemeyer doesn’t improve soon. He also states the team doesn’t believe it has any viable replacements within the organization.

Wellemeyer is 7-7 with a 5.56 ERA. In two of his last three starts Wellemeyer failed to pitch more than 4 innings, surrendering a combined 7 runs.

He was used in relief Sunday prior to the All Star break and only recorded one out while walking two and allowing 3 (unearned) runs to score.

Possible pitchers available include Roy Halladay, Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland, Doug Davis, Gil Meche and possibly even Cliff Lee.

Strauss also said that the Cardinals aren’t looking for a slight upgrade, and would need to make a significant improvement to the club in order to make a deal.
