In the wake of the news that 2011 postseason hero Chris Carpenter will undergo season-ending surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome, the Cardinals will be looking for pitching on the trade market, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.
Some of the more attractive pitchers that could become available, however, are from other N.L. Central teams – such as Zack Greinke of the Brewers, Wandy Rodriguez of the Astros, and Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster of the Cubs – so it’s unlikely that the Cards would deal for one of those players.
Cole Hamels of the Phillies is also said to be available but he will likely come at a steep price.
Perhaps the Cardinals could look to the American League, like Brandon McCarthy or Bartolo Colon of the Athletics. Both have had their share of injury problems this season, however. But, they could be more affordable to acquire than others.
Needless to say, the Cardinals will probably be tied to just about every available arm mentioned in trade rumors over the coming weeks, as they look to defend their World Series title.
