Rumor: Cardinals Courting Schilling

by Ben Cook on November 3, 2007

The buzz today in St. Louis is that the Cardinals have reportedly contacted free agent pitcher Curt Schilling to express their interest in the soon to be 41 year old pitcher. The Redbirds were of course on of the 13 teams Schilling mentioned he and his family would consider if he was unable to work out a deal to return to the RedSox. While Boston remains his first choice, Schilling reiterated his interest in the Cardinals on a local radio show, saying:

“I’ve always been an enormous fan of the Cardinals organization and the Cardinals’ fan base,” Schilling told the morning show. “Win, lose or draw, the Cardinals fans are passionate about the Cardinals. There is really a family type of atmosphere, a Midwest atmosphere, and I was a fan of that.”

While the Cardinals certainly won't be the only team interested, this would make a LOT of sense for the beaten up birds. With former ace Chris Carpenter out for the year with Tommy John surgery and Mark Mulder a big unknown, St. Louis could use a proven front of the rotation veteran especially if they only had to commit to a one year deal. As long time Rumor Mill readers will know I'm a St. Louis fan born and bred so it's tough for me to be impartial but it seems like the Cardinals offer Schilling whatever it takes to see him wearing the birds on the bat next year.

Spread the Rumor!

The Cards need a bridge to the future. If they can spend for a few high price players now but only tie up the money for a year or, they’ll have a chance to develop some younger players and hope Carpenter comes back as a legit number one starter. Shilling would fit that scenario to a tee!
