The San Diego Union-Tribune's website, signonsandiego.com is reporting (scroll down) that the Padres are interested in St. Louis Cardinal's center fielder Jim Edmonds. The article states that the Cardinals would have to eat a portion of Jimmy's salary and probably shouldn't expect much in return, but really I'm not sure that wouldn't be a good deal for the Cards. Before going any further I should disclose that I couldn't understand the motivation behind St. Louis signing the aging outfielder to a two year deal in the first place. However, with the emergence of Rick Ankiel and the highly touted Colby Rasmus quickly climbing the ladder, the outfield would seem like an area the Cardinals could go cheap on without sacrificing much pop. I'm guessing if the Padres are willing to take on 6 of the $8 million owed to Jimmy this deal gets done no matter who San Diego ships east in return.
