Rays pick up options on Shields and Molina

The Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin reported on Tuesday that the Rays are expected to pick up catcher Jose Molina’s $1.8 million club option for the 2013 season.

It’s that or buy out the 37-year-old brother of Bengie for $300,000.

The Rays obviously have plans, but what they are is unclear, as they sign a player who seems likely to serve as a backup for Tampa Bay again in 2013, unless Tampa can find itself a fulltime catcher on the open market this winter.

Although playing a usual brand of steady defense, Molina did not hit well last season with the Rays, managing just a .223/.286/.355 (80 OPS+) in 102 games.

However, he threw out 33 percent of attempted base stealers compared to a league rate of 25 percent is a more than adequate pitch caller from behind the plate.

Meanwhile, the Rays will also pick up pitcher James Shields’ $10.25 million club option for 2013.

Shields posted a 3.52 ERA in 30 starts this season and was a bargain at this price.
