The Texas Rangers have officially signed longtime Houston Astros’ slugger Lance Berkman to a one-year, $10 million contract, after passing his physical on Monday.

The deal also includes a $12 million option for 2014, or the option could vest for $13 million if he reaches 550 plate appearances.

Not something that is likely to happen given the first baseman/designated hitter’s bad knees which limited the to just 32 games with the St. Louis Cardinals this past season due to injury.

However, in 2011, the 36-year old hit .301 with 31 homers and 94 RBIs with an OPS of .959.

Because he still has the power to get it done at the plate, Berkman will serve as the Rangers’ regular DH.

He has batted well at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where he has .289 average with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 121 career at-bats.
