Jays Among Many Teams Eyeing Carlos Beltran

by kelly on December 14, 2011

Yesterday we learned that the Rockies are interested in outfielder Carlos Beltran if they can’t get Michael Cuddyer. Within this CBSSports.com piece, Scott Miller says there are as many as five teams in on the 34-year-old switch hitter, including the Blue Jays and the Cardinals.

Beltran would be an interesting add for the Blue Jays, who look to be making a push for relevancy in the AL East. They’ve already added closer Sergio Santos and have been in talks with the A’s for starter Gio Gonzalez. If they secure Beltran as well, they’d be clear contenders.

The Cardinals could use another bat to help lessen the blow of losing Albert Pujols. A Beltran acquisition could put Lance Berkman at first base and shore up the outfield defense some, in addition to adding a little thump to the lineup.

Miller says the other two teams that are in on Beltran are as of yet unidentified.

In 2011, Beltran played for the Mets and the Giants, hitting .300 with 22 home runs and 84 RBI. He’s seeking a multi-year deal this offesason.
