Just a few hours after announcing that they signed starter Brandon Morrow to a three-year contract, the Toronto bullpen got a little deeper as the Blue Jays signed closer Francisco Cordero to a one-year contract for $4.5 million deal, pending a physical.
The 36-year-old Cordero was 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 37 saves for the Reds last season, bringing is his total save to 150 for the Reds from 2008 through 2011.
But he lost his job recently when the Reds signed former Phillies closer Ryan Madson to a one-year deal.
Cordero is 44-45 with a 3.17 ERA and 327 saves over a 13-season career with Detroit, Texas, Milwaukee and Cincinnati.
This is a good move for Toronto as Cordero provides veteran insurance for young closer Sergio Santos.
Toronto has been busy, and with this recent signing, brings the number of roster players under contract to 19, with just Casey Janssen remaining as arbitration eligible.
