The Nationals have agreed to sign starting pitcher Edwin Jackson to a one-year deal. Jon Heyman reported the news on Twitter and notes that Jackson is in Washington today for a physical.

Exact numbers on the deal are not known yet but Heyman expects it to be between $8 million and $12 million for the 28-year-old righty.

Jackson was traded to St. Louis at the deadline in 2011 as part of a three-team trade, and he won a ring with the Cardinals, going 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 12 starts for them. He has had trouble securing a multi-year deal this winter, however, and looks to be setting himself up for one next offseason.

The Nationals’ rotation is certainly beefed up for 2012. Jackson joins new acquisition Gio Gonzalez and young stars Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman to form one of the most potent young staffs in the game.
